Taser cartridges (see TASER X2 cartridges), also known as probes or darts, are an essential component of Taser devices that allow users to incapacitate individuals from a distance. Tasers are non-lethal weapons that use electrical shocks to temporarily disable a person's muscle control, making it difficult for them to move or resist arrest.

The Taser cartridge contains two probes connected to thin wires that are launched from the device toward the target. These probes are typically about four inches long and are made of metal, usually conductive metals like stainless steel or titanium. The probes are designed to penetrate clothing and skin, allowing the electrical current to pass through the target's body.

When the Taser device is activated, a high-voltage, low-amperage electrical current is sent through the wires and into the probes. This current causes the target's muscles to contract and spasm, making it difficult for them to move or resist arrest. The electrical current also disrupts the target's nervous system, which can cause disorientation and confusion.

The Taser device can be used in two different modes: drive-stun mode and probe mode. In drive-stun mode, the device is pressed directly against the target's body, delivering an electrical shock through the metal contacts on the device. This is typically used for close-quarters self-defense or as a means of pain compliance. In probe mode, the device is used to launch the probes at the target. This mode is used for longer-range engagements, and the probes can travel up to 15 feet for civilian models or 35 feet for law enforcement models.

The Taser device uses compressed nitrogen to launch the probes. When the trigger is pulled, a small amount of nitrogen gas is released from a cylinder in the device. This gas propels the probes out of the device and towards the target. The probes are connected to the wires by small explosive charges that detonate when the probes reach the target. This causes the probes to embed themselves in the target's skin or clothing, allowing the electrical current to pass through the target's body.

The electrical current delivered by a Taser device is typically 50,000 volts. However, the actual current that passes through the target's body is much lower, around 3 to 5 milliamperes. This is because the Taser's high voltage is rapidly dropped by the target's resistance. Despite this, the current is still enough to incapacitate the target.

The duration of the electrical shock delivered by a Taser device is typically between 5 and 30 seconds, depending on the model. This is long enough to incapacitate the target but not long enough to cause permanent damage. After the shock has ended, the target will typically regain muscle control within a few minutes.

There are several safety features built into Taser devices to prevent accidental discharge or misuse. For example, most Taser devices have a safety switch that must be turned on before the device can be fired. This helps prevent accidental discharge if the device is dropped or mishandled. Additionally, some Taser devices have built-in cameras that record the incident, which can be used to provide evidence in court.

It's important to note that while Taser devices are non-lethal, they can still cause serious injuries or even death if used improperly. It's crucial that law enforcement and other security personnel are properly trained in the use of Taser devices and follow established guidelines and protocols.

Additionally, Tasers are not without controversy and criticism. Some studies suggest that Tasers may increase the risk of injury or death, particularly in certain populations such as people with heart conditions or those under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Moreover, Tasers have been subject to criticism for the use of force, specifically in the death of individuals in police custody.
