CarjackedCarjacking is a violent crime in which a person is forced out of their car and the car is stolen. It can happen anywhere, at any time, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk.

Here are some tips on how to prevent being carjacked:

- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to the people and vehicles around you, especially when you are entering or exiting your car. If you see something suspicious, trust your gut and avoid the situation.

- Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up, even when you are parked. This will make it more difficult for a carjacker to gain access to your vehicle.

- Park in well-lit, well-trafficked areas. Avoid parking in dark, isolated areas, such as alleys or parking garages.

- Don't leave valuables in plain sight in your car. This can make your car a target for thieves. If you must leave valuables in your car, lock them in the trunk.

- Be aware of your surroundings when approaching your car. If you see someone suspicious lurking nearby, wait until they are gone before getting in your car.

- If you are getting in your car at night, use your key fob to unlock the doors from a distance. This will give you time to see if anyone is approaching your car before you get in.

- Once you are in your car, lock the doors and roll up the windows immediately.

- If you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station or fire station.

- If you are stopped at a red light or intersection, leave enough space between you and the car in front of you so that you can maneuver around them if necessary.

- Avoid talking on the phone or texting while you are driving. This can distract you from your surroundings.

- If you are driving alone at night, try to avoid driving on deserted roads.

- Vary your travel routes and times. This will make it more difficult for a carjacker to predict where and when you will be.

- If you are driving home from work or school, let someone know when you expect to arrive.

- If you are driving alone at night, keep your phone charged and handy.

- If you see a carjacker in action, do not intervene. Call 911 immediately and provide as much information as possible about the carjacker and the victim's vehicle.

- If you are being approached by a suspicious person, don't roll down your window or get out of your car. Drive away to a safe place and call 911.
